In the treatment of cancer, Avastin© is essential to success because it is the only therapy that specifically targets VEGF the most precise and effective way to inhibit angiogenesis (a universal process in tumour growth), thereby providing breakthrough quality survival across a range of disease settings and treatment combinations.

Avastin© (bevacizumab) is a humanised monoclonal antibody (MAb) that targets vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), the key mediator of tumour angiogenesis.

By inhibiting VEGF, Avastin© :

  • causes regression of tumour vasculature
  • educes intratumoral pressure, thus improving the delivery of cytotoxic agents to the tumour
  • inhibits new tumour blood vessel formation, restricting tumour growth.

Avastin© is the first anti-angiogenic agent with demonstrated anticancer benefit in phase III trials. Avastin© has been shown to extend the survival of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer when used first line in combination with chemotherapy.
